<!--TOTAL_ITEMS--> not working

As title says, <!--TOTAL_ITEMS--> code not return total items of thumbs, only return how much are listed on page, when I list thumbs on main page. What could be problem?

If you don't have <navigation tag script thinks that you don't need total amount and don't count it trying to save some resources.

I using custom pagination without navigation tag, but will try somehow to put navigation tag but to try not to display it
