I have a category list of 5 columns sorted alphabetically with first_letter= tag at the bottom of my page. How can I get the categories to display evenly from column to column?

I don't think your category list changes everyday
So just count how many of them you have

So use all static html in template? This is what I've done before, wasn't sure if there was a way to do it with first_letter=.

No
Column 1
<category num=1-10
Column 2
<category num=11-20
and so on
